I'm searching for apps that can convert text from books into audio format. My grandma is gradually losing her vision and she previously tried using Readify, which she found exciting, but unfortunately, it only works with text files. What she really needs is an app that allows her to take a photo of any book page and convert that text into audio. I've done some research and found a few options, but many of them come with subscription fees, and I want to avoid her having to pay for several different apps just to find out which ones are worthwhile.

You should take a look at the KNFB Reader. It's designed for accessibility and can read books as well as other texts like labels and pill bottles. It's available on Android, iOS, and Windows. I learned about it a while back on some tech news, but there might be better choices out there. It could be useful to connect with a local blind or low vision group for more personalized recommendations too.
I recommend checking out Foxit PDF Editor if she uses Android. It has a "read" mode that reads aloud PDF files, and the best part is that it’s completely free! It might be worth a shot for her needs.

I found that link leads to an app that's quite pricey in the U.K., which makes it less appealing if there's no trial version. It's a lot to spend without knowing if it's truly worth it!
