Hey everyone! I'm thinking about making the switch from Windows 11 to Linux and I need some help picking the right distribution. My main activities on the PC include gaming on Steam and Epic Games, as well as playing League of Legends. I also use Discord often, focusing on mouse and keyboard play but sometimes switching to my Xbox controller.

A key feature I need is something similar to the monitor switcher on Windows, which allows me to manage my three desktop monitors and my TV, dimming unused screens and keeping everything tidy. Occasionally, I use my PC for some office work, mainly Word and Excel, but I'm open to alternatives. I also stream Netflix through my browser.

My PC specs are as follows: RTX 4070 Ti, Ryzen 7 9800x 3D, and an Asus ROG Strix B650-E F Wifi. I hope I've provided enough details! Thanks so much in advance for your recommendations. 🙂

Also, quick side note: Do ultrawide monitors like the Odyssey G9 Oled 49" work natively with Linux?

Linux Mint is often recommended for beginners. It feels familiar if you're coming from Windows, but you'll need to set up a few things like Steam and Discord. LibreOffice is included as an alternative to Microsoft Office. If you want something more gaming-focused, Nobara is worth checking out, but it's a bit trickier to set up. For a challenge, you can try EndeavourOS, but it demands some command line knowledge to get everything working. You might find Linux Mint's Cinnamon desktop environment the easiest to adapt to since it's similar to Windows 10.

I've just started with Ubuntu, and it's been pretty straightforward so far. Both Steam and Discord work without a hitch. Just keep in mind, some multiplayer games may have issues due to anti-cheat systems, but there are ways to tackle that. It comes with a Word alternative pre-installed, and you can always test it out before fully committing to the installation. As for your controller, it worked perfectly for me after a quick setting adjustment in the app.

Honestly, any Linux distribution can work well for gaming. Just pick one that appeals to you! People rave about Mint, but CachyOS is also popular for gamers because it’s optimized for that. If you run into issues deciding on a desktop, KDE is really a good choice to go with.

If you're unsure which desktop environment to use, I recommend starting with KDE. It's user-friendly and quite customizable. There are many options out there, but Mint tends to be a top favorite among those moving from Windows. Having a big community is essential because you’ll be relying on tutorials and forums for help as you adjust.

Bazzite is great for beginners! It has a lot of gaming stuff pre-installed, and installation is super easy. The downside is that Linux and Nvidia sometimes don’t get along perfectly, but improvements are ongoing. You may want to forget about League of Legends for now because of compatibility issues with its anti-cheat, but you can use the Heroic Games Launcher for Epic Games. They have Discord and office applications like LibreOffice available too.
