Can Permanently Deleted Voice Memos Be Recovered From an iPhone?

I urgently need help recovering voice recordings from the Voice Memos app on an iPhone 16 Pro. The phone has not been backed up to iCloud since May because the storage was full. The recordings were deleted from Voice Memos and then removed from the Recently Deleted folder without my permission. They may be important evidence in a legal case involving alleged crimes. Are there any realistic options, such as backups, forensic tools, or professional data recovery services?

Tell your attorney that the recordings were deleted and explain who had access to the phone. Depending on your location, evidence-handling rules may require law enforcement or a certified forensic examiner to collect and analyze the device. They can also advise on documenting the deletion and maintaining proper chain of custody.

The most important step is to stop using the phone and avoid installing apps, recording anything, or updating it. Contact a reputable mobile-device forensic or data-recovery specialist immediately, and tell your lawyer or the relevant authorities what happened. Do not attempt repeated recovery procedures yourself, since you could complicate the evidence or its chain of custody.

Thanks. I’ll speak with my lawyer before doing anything else and look for a qualified forensic specialist.

Unfortunately, permanently deleting files from a recent iPhone is very different from deleting files from an old hard drive. File-carving tools normally used on removable or unencrypted storage are not likely to work here. A professional examination is the only sensible remaining technical option, but it is best to prepare for the possibility that the recordings cannot be recovered.

On modern iPhones, permanently deleted data is protected by hardware-backed encryption and storage-management processes. Once a Voice Memo is removed from Recently Deleted, ordinary recovery programs generally cannot scan the storage and reconstruct it. A specialist may be able to check for unusual remnants, but the chances are very low and there is no reliable guarantee.

Before assuming it is gone, check every legitimate copy: an older computer backup, another device signed into the same Apple account, an export or attachment sent by email or messaging, and any other cloud-storage account. If none exists, recovery is unlikely. Because this concerns a legal matter, preserve the phone as-is and let qualified legal or forensic professionals handle it rather than trying consumer software.

A backup made on a computer could be especially useful, since it might contain the recordings even if the cloud backup is too old.
