I have a 2006 Chevy Malibu with what seems to be just a CD player and AM/FM radio. I'd like to listen to music from my phone through the car's speakers during a long trip. What's the easiest way to connect it, and are there any options besides replacing the stereo?

A portable Bluetooth speaker is another easy fallback if you don’t want to modify the car. It won’t use the vehicle’s speakers, but it avoids FM static and works in any car. Keep it secured so it doesn’t become a hazard if you stop suddenly.

You could replace the factory stereo with an aftermarket unit that has Bluetooth, USB, and possibly hands-free calling. That gives you the cleanest and most convenient setup, but installation costs more than a plug-in FM transmitter. Some older factory radios also have hidden connections for accessories, but compatibility varies by exact stereo model.

The easiest option is a Bluetooth FM transmitter. It plugs into the 12V outlet, connects to your phone over Bluetooth, and broadcasts the audio on an unused FM frequency. Tune the car radio to that frequency and you’re set. The sound quality is decent, though you may need to change frequencies when traveling through different areas.

Check the stereo carefully for an AUX or Line In jack first. If it has one, a small Bluetooth-to-AUX receiver will sound better and avoid radio interference. If there’s no AUX input, a cassette adapter won’t help unless the car actually has a cassette deck, so an FM transmitter is probably the simplest choice for the Malibu.
