What’s the easiest way to create a lasting family memorial website?

I'd like to create a public website honoring family members who have passed away. Family and friends around the world should be able to add photos and view announcements about family activities and memories. Some relatives aren't very comfortable with technology, so the site needs to be simple to use. I'm not interested in using mainstream social media. I assume I'll need to register a domain and choose a hosting provider—what would you recommend, and what features should I compare?

If you do want a conventional website, shared hosting is more than enough for a family photo and announcement site. Choose a provider with one-click installation, automatic backups, good support, and an easy gallery system. A domain registrar can be separate from the host; keeping them independent makes it easier to change providers later. Avoid paying for high-end servers or features you won’t use.

For a long-term memorial site, I’d prioritize simplicity over having lots of advanced features. A hosted site builder such as Squarespace or Wix may be a better fit than self-hosted WordPress because hosting, updates, security, backups, galleries, and announcements are handled for you. Buy the domain separately from the site builder so you can move the website later if necessary. Turn on automatic renewal and make sure at least two trusted people can access the account, so the site doesn’t disappear if one person loses access or a payment method expires.

Plan for the site’s long-term survival, not just its initial setup. Keep downloadable copies of the photos and announcements, and consider making printed albums or memorial books as well. Websites and online services can change or disappear over the years, while printed copies are much more likely to remain available to the family.

You could avoid traditional hosting altogether by using a file-upload form connected to cloud storage. Family members can open a link and submit photos without creating accounts, and the files will go into a folder you manage. This is inexpensive and easy for less technical relatives, although it won’t feel as much like a complete public website unless you add a separate page for announcements and memories.

That sounds much simpler for the people who only need to upload photos. I’ll consider combining it with a basic information page.
