I'm an independent web developer who has spent more than a year building a website for young teens and children. The platform's hosting and AI moderation costs are becoming difficult to cover, so I'm looking for ways to monetize it as early as possible.
I tried Google AdSense, Adsterra, and MGID. Google and MGID rejected the site because it doesn't have enough traffic, while Adsterra accepted it. Unfortunately, Adsterra's content filtering has not been reliable, and adult-oriented ads have appeared even with safety settings enabled.
I need an advertising or funding option that can provide school-appropriate content and ideally work with a relatively small audience. Are there any ad networks or other monetization approaches worth considering?

The main issue is that advertising usually doesn’t generate meaningful revenue until a site has substantial traffic. If networks are rejecting you for low traffic, any network that accepts you probably won’t bring in enough money to cover expensive hosting and moderation costs. It may be better to reduce infrastructure costs first and treat ads as a later-stage option.
If the service is already expensive with very few users, I’d revisit the architecture and recurring services before focusing on monetization. Lowering AI usage, hosting, or moderation costs could have a larger impact than adding ads, especially at the current traffic level.
For a site intended for children, general ad networks can be especially risky because their filtering may not be dependable. Consider donations, optional paid features, merchandise, or direct sponsorships from businesses that specifically serve families or schools. Those options can give you more control over what your audience sees.
Ads are unlikely to provide immediate income. Even sites with fairly good traffic can earn very little, and some advertising platforms don’t issue a payout until you reach a minimum balance. You may need another funding source to keep the project running while you build an audience.
