I'm a student who recently signed up for the AWS Free Tier to learn about cloud services. Unfortunately, I mistakenly created an OpenSearch service without realizing it wasn't covered by the Free Tier. Now, a few weeks later, I've noticed a charge of $67 on my account! I quickly deleted the OpenSearch resource and reached out to AWS Support for a one-time billing waiver, as I genuinely can't afford this bill.
However, all I received was an automated response about Free Tier usage that didn't really help with my situation. I've removed all services, stopped using AWS, and even tried to delete my credit card info, but the charge is still pending. I'm really stressed since I don't have any income and absolutely can't address this payment.
I'm wondering:
* Has anyone managed to get AWS to waive a charge like this?
* If I follow up, should I expect to talk to a real person, or is there a better way to escalate my situation?
* What could happen if I decide not to pay? Will they send it to collections or just block my account?

You really need to reach out to AWS again and make your case. They typically provide credits for first-time mistakes, but you’ll need to show that you’re taking this seriously. Just keep in mind to be more careful moving forward—set billing alerts and double-check before launching new services.
I totally get how frustrating this is! They definitely need to do a better job of preventing unexpected charges. I think they should implement billing limits so people don’t get blindsided like this. But honestly, you might have to follow up a few times to get a human on the line.
