Why Aren’t My External Drives Recognized by Windows 11?

Hey everyone, I'm in a bit of a pickle! My Windows 11 desktop suddenly stopped recognizing all kinds of external drives, whether they're USB sticks, NVMe, or HDDs. Just a few weeks ago, everything worked perfectly. When I plug in a drive, I hear the familiar connect/disconnect sounds, but it doesn't show up in File Explorer under "My PC" or "Devices and Drives." However, the drives do appear in Disk Management, but they don't have a drive letter assigned. When I try to assign one, I get an error saying, "The operation failed to complete because the disk management console view is not up to date." The weird part is that these external drives work fine on other PCs. Here's what I've tried so far: updating BIOS, updating drivers, checking the drives on other PCs, refreshing Disk Management, and even using MiniTool Wizard. Any thoughts on what might be going on?

Have you thought about doing a system restore to a point before this issue started? It might help if you have any restore points available. It could just bring everything back to normal without too much hassle!

I've dealt with similar issues with USB drives myself. Sometimes, it’s just weird quirks of Windows. I had two of the same model drive; one worked on my old PC, but not on the new one, while both worked on other devices. I wasted a lot of time trying to format them and mess with drivers. Eventually, I just gave up and bought a new, cheap USB stick. Might be worth trying that if possible!
