I'm visiting New York from the UK and am considering buying an unlocked, full-price iPhone 17 from an Apple Store because the US price is considerably lower. I currently use a OnePlus 13 and would ideally like Apple to assess it in store, apply the trade-in value, and let me pay the difference.
If I trade it in during the purchase, do I have to hand over the OnePlus immediately, or can I buy the iPhone, transfer my photos, apps, passwords, and other data first, then return the old phone afterward? Does Apple US accept OnePlus devices, specifically the OnePlus 13, for in-store trade-in?
I'm also trying to understand the practical issues of using a US iPhone in the UK. Since the US model is eSIM-only, I would need to move my UK number from a physical SIM to an eSIM. Can that be done while I'm still in the US, and are there any carrier or compatibility limitations? I'm planning to avoid US carrier financing and use the phone permanently in the UK, so I'd also appreciate advice about regional hardware differences, warranty service, and anything else an international buyer should check.

A US iPhone should work on UK networks if the relevant bands and carrier features are supported, but the regional model may not be identical to the UK version. Check the precise model number and your carrier’s compatibility list, especially for 5G, VoLTE, Wi‑Fi calling, and emergency services. Also confirm that the phone is unlocked and remember that US sales tax is added at checkout.
US Apple Stores generally accept eligible Android phones, but the exact trade-in value and whether a OnePlus 13 is listed can change. Use Apple’s trade-in checker or have the store inspect it; eligibility, condition, storage, and whether the phone powers on will affect the offer. If it isn’t eligible for credit, Apple may still recycle it, but that is different from receiving a discount.
Apple can usually perform data-transfer setup in store if staff have time, but an in-store trade-in normally means surrendering the old device during the transaction. Don’t assume you can take it away for several days after receiving the trade-in credit. Back up everything first, and ask the store whether they can delay finalizing the trade-in or help with the transfer.
The safest approach is to complete the SIM-to-eSIM conversion after you return to the UK. Activating an eSIM while abroad can work over reliable Wi‑Fi, but if the transfer fails or your physical SIM is deactivated first, you could temporarily lose access to your number.
