I recently read that many businesses in the European Union worry the U.S. government could somehow activate a "kill switch" and leave them unable to operate within a day or two. How could that actually happen if a company uses European email, cloud hosting, and other local services? Is this a realistic technology risk, or mostly fearmongering?

A practical response is to avoid relying on one vendor: keep exportable backups, maintain separate administrative access, document how to migrate services, and use providers in more than one jurisdiction where appropriate. Messaging and email alternatives can reduce exposure, but even European services may still depend on American hardware, software, cloud platforms, or global infrastructure.
There isn’t a single U.S. kill switch for the internet. The concern is that many organizations depend on American companies such as Microsoft, Google, Amazon, and Apple for identity systems, cloud infrastructure, email, app stores, and collaboration tools. If a provider had to comply with U.S. sanctions or another legal order, it could suspend an account or restrict access, potentially disrupting a business that relies on it.
Some of the claims are definitely exaggerated. European companies can use providers based in Europe and operate their own infrastructure, and the internet is decentralized rather than controlled by one country. However, replacing every U.S.-linked service is difficult, so the concern is not completely imaginary—especially for organizations that have no tested fallback plan.
The risk is more about concentration and dependency than the whole internet being turned off. A company might store data in Europe but still use an American provider for authentication, backups, DNS, software licenses, payment systems, or cloud services. Losing one of those dependencies could cause serious problems unless there are independent backups and alternative providers.
