Advice for a Recently Laid-Off Professional Looking to Upskill

Hey everyone! I've recently been laid off from a senior admin position where I handled SCCM, Citrix, and disaster recovery/backups with Commvault. With 25 years of experience across various technologies, including Cisco and Windows, I've decided to take this opportunity to earn some certifications. I'm currently working on the SSCP as a mid-level security certification and was looking into CCSP, but I don't have the required year of cloud security experience yet. I'm also aiming to get AWS and Azure certifications. If there happens to be a certification related to agentic or generative AI, I'd be keen on that as well. Does this sound like a solid plan to everyone?

I think pursuing those certifications is smart! While having certifications can be helpful, keep in mind that they won't necessarily boost your CV unless you're applying for roles outside your main expertise. The AI space is becoming really hot right now, so if you can find related certifications, definitely prioritize those. In interviews, be ready to explain how your extensive experience applies to AI management and deployment.

Totally agree! AI is booming at the moment. Emphasizing how your background can enhance AI initiatives will give you an edge.

If you're also looking to refresh your Windows skills, I recommend checking out the "PowerShell in a Month of Lunches" playlist on YouTube! That's a great way to brush up on best practices. Having knowledge of VMware along with your Windows skills could really enhance your profile, especially since many companies are adopting hypervisors. Best of luck!

And just an FYI, some firms will sadly judge by age, so a fresh look on your resume might help if your experience includes older tech. Don't let ageism get you down; focus on what you can bring to the table with your skills and experience.

Good point! It's frustrating, but I’ll keep that in mind. Aging in tech is definitely a challenge. Thanks for the advice!

Getting certified is definitely a good move, especially if you're looking to stay current. The job market can be tough, particularly at your age, but focusing on certifications like SSCP and cloud certifications might set you apart. Just a heads up, typical hiring trends slow down in November but pick up in February. So, take some time for yourself if you can and come back strong in the new year!

Just don't lose hope while job hunting! Companies often look for onsite presence, and you might need to endure several interviews with low ball offers, but there are opportunities out there! It can take a bit to find the right fit, so keep pushing forward.
