Hey everyone! I'm looking for some guidance on how to upgrade my current PC setup while also helping my brother build his first gaming rig. Currently, I've got an Intel Core i5-10400F CPU paired with a GTX 1080 GPU, and I'm wanting to boost my performance for newer games, like Arc Raiders. I'm considering picking up a Radeon RX 9060 XT for about $400 and giving my brother the GTX 1080 to kick off his gaming journey.
I'm torn between two options:
1. Keep my current i5-10400F/B460 setup, grab the 9060 XT, and build my brother a budget AM4 system using the GTX 1080 (like with a Ryzen 5 5600 and a B450 motherboard).
2. Go for a full upgrade on my platform (CPU, motherboard, and RAM), and pass down my i5-10400F, B460, and RAM to him.
I've got some constraints too: should I hold off and wait for the market to stabilize before upgrading my GPU or switching to an AM5 platform? Or is it smarter to just dive in and get the RX 9060 XT now, even if it might be bottlenecked by my current CPU for a bit? Is an AM4 build for GTX 1080 valid if done in late 2025, or would it be a poor investment? Any advice on balancing these builds without overspending would be extremely appreciated! Thanks!

The most effective route would be to upgrade your GPU right now and stick with your 10400F for a bit longer. Your GPU is the main limiting factor, and the 9060 XT will significantly enhance your FPS right away. The i5-10400F can still handle modern titles well, especially if you're gaming at 1440p. If you switch the GTX 1080 for the new RX 9060 XT, you'll be unlocking much better performance.
Changing platforms now to AM5 or something similar just doesn’t make much sense financially—DDR5 prices are still high, and new motherboards can be very expensive. You'd get minimal performance increase for the cost. The best advice would be to hold onto your 10400F and B460, grab the RX 9060 XT, and set up a good AM4 system for your brother with the GTX 1080. That way you deal with your performance needs immediately while also ensuring your brother has a decent machine to start with. Upgrading everything right now only makes sense if you have specific high-end requirements, which doesn't appear to be the case here.
Given the current prices for DDR5, I'd suggest upgrading to an Intel 12th-14th gen DDR4 motherboard and reusing your RAM. Even the entry-level 12400F would give you a solid performance boost compared to your 10400F, and it pairs nicely with the 9060 XT. It’s a good way to save money while still making a worthwhile upgrade!
I've noticed those Raptor Lake CPUs are increasing in price really fast; seems like others are thinking the same thing. It's tough out there!
Totally agree! Almost forgot you can still use DDR4 with those newer Intel chips. It’s a smart way to save money, especially since you’d still need more RAM for your brother's build.

Thanks for the insightful breakdown! Appreciate it <3
