Advice on Building a New File Server: Should I Use Multiple Drives or One Big Drive?

I'm looking to build a new file server because our current setup has become a mess. We're using an old SBS server, which was kind of cobbled together and isn't working well anymore. Windows search and indexing keep breaking down, and it's becoming really frustrating. Users have started using Total Commander instead.

Right now, we have a Hyper-V environment with a file server that has 3 drives used for different types of shared data, totaling about 4.14TB. The new file server is also going to run as a Hyper-V guest. It currently has 8 CPUs, 16GB of RAM, and is connected to a 10GbE network.

My main question is: when I build this new server, should I spread the data across multiple hard drives, or would it make more sense to just have one large 6TB drive for everything? Thanks for your input!

Using at least 2 equal-sized hard drives in RAID1 or multiple in RAID5 is a smart move. That way, if one drive fails, you won't lose any data or access to the server. Redundancy is key when it comes to data safety!

Not sure why you are going down this road? What does it have to do with my question? If you must know, we have a SAN on a 10GbE connection with multiple spindles, and we host about 14 servers in our Hyper-V environment. So, you can explain how you jumped off the tracks with my question? If you think I should have multiple drives, cool, that's all you had to say.
