Hey folks! I currently hold a local top-level domain but really want to snag the .com version too. The domain I'm eyeing belongs to a small UK business and just redirects to their main site, which is currently a basic, under-construction page that hasn't changed in years. Although the company is still active according to the UK registry, they don't seem to use this site. The registration is set to expire in about a year. I'm okay with waiting, but I'm looking for advice on the best approach here. Should I just wait and see if they renew it in 2026? What will happen if they don't? Can I claim it after the expiration period? Or should I try reaching out to them to see if they'd sell it for a small fee? I'd love to hear your thoughts. Thanks!

If you’re really set on that domain, don’t wait too long! There's a real chance that as soon as the registration expires, someone else could snap it up with a bot and then try to resell it at a crazy markup.
Definitely try contacting them! Even if they aren't actively using the site, they might not realize the value. It's worth a shot to ask if they're willing to sell it.
I'd recommend reaching out to them first and see if they're open to selling it. Sometimes, businesses aren't even using certain domains and may be willing to part with it for the right price!
True, but keep in mind that the WHOIS info is often protected, so it might be tough to contact them.
