Advice on Upgrading My Old PC for Gaming and 3D Modeling

Hey everyone! This is my first post and I'm diving into upgrading my old prebuilt computer. Currently, I have Windows 10 and some decent specs: an Intel Core i7 6700 CPU, 16 GB of DDR4 RAM, an ASUSTek G11CD motherboard, and a GTX 1080 GPU. I'm looking to rebuild but want to salvage what I can. I've noticed that my CPU often bottlenecks during games, especially in multiplayer ones like Fortnite and single-player games like Final Fantasy 14.

I want to stick with DDR4 and keep my GPU for now, but I'm ready to upgrade the motherboard, CPU, and likely the RAM as well. I'm hoping to find a good combo in the CAD 500-700 range, but I'm open to spending a bit more for something that gives me longevity. When choosing the motherboard and CPU combo, I've been eyeing the Ryzen 7 5800XT and Gigabyte B550 Gaming X V2 - what do you all think? Also, I've got some SATA SSDs that I plan to reuse; can I just plug them into a new build and reinstall Windows, or will I need a fresh install? Thanks for your help!

Hey! For your upgrades, the Ryzen 7 5800XT and B550 Gaming X V2 are solid choices. They’ll definitely give you a performance boost for gaming and 3D modeling. I also found that the Peerless Assassin SE 120 cooler is cheaper on Amazon right now, which could save you some bucks while keeping your CPU cool. Check out Newegg for the components too, they often have good deals.

As for GPUs, if you plan on upgrading later, maybe save up for a B580 12GB or 9060XT 16GB. You could also snag a used card like a 3080 or 6800XT. Good luck with your build!

Oh awesome, I didn’t know about the cheaper price on Amazon! Thanks for the GPU tips too. Are there any trusted websites for buying used PC parts?
