Are there still volunteer opportunities in game development?

Back in college, I got involved in some exciting volunteer game development projects, including making a top-down Zelda-style RPG and a first-person shooter. Those experiences really helped me kickstart my career in the video game industry. However, my path took a different direction, and I've mostly been out of the coding scene for about a decade, only doing some basic Excel macros. Now, I'm eager to sharpen my coding skills again, particularly the math side, but I'd prefer not to build an entire app from scratch or work for a company right away. Are there any volunteer projects out there where I can contribute and develop my skills again?

Absolutely! The open-source community thrives on contributions from developers. You can find plenty of projects to volunteer your skills. Sites like GitHub host loads of opportunities.

You might want to look into projects like Codecrafters, but if you’re after more interactive development experiences, consider diving into open-source game projects on GitHub. Lots of them have community forums or Discord channels where you can collaborate and share ideas.

Thanks for the suggestion! I appreciate it, but I’m really hoping to join a project that’s actively implemented and enjoyed by users, rather than just completing exercises alone. It was that community vibe that really helped me focus back then.
