I'm currently using Kubuntu on my ancient dual-core Atom netbook, and it's a bit sluggish. I'm looking for a lightweight Linux distro or desktop environment where I can place the taskbar vertically on the left side of the screen. I remember from about ten years ago that only KDE and XFCE had that flexibility. I've come across options like MX Linux, Xubuntu, and Mint XFCE, and I'm curious which one is best. I'm also open to other non-XFCE options that can accommodate a left-side taskbar. A decade ago, I tried Mate and LXQT, but they couldn't do it. Any recommendations?

MX Linux is a solid option too, as it’s lightweight and has good community support. You might find it performs well on your netbook!
If you're looking to avoid XFCE and want something lightweight, consider going with LXQt. It's quite flexible and will let you position the panel on the left side easily.
I suggest you check out antiX if you want something really light. It might not guarantee vertical taskbar support across all its window managers, but it has some options to play with.
How potato are we talking about? What are the specs on your device? Knowing the RAM and CPU would help in making a suggestion.
Lubuntu with LXQt is a great choice! It allows you to put the taskbar on any side, and it's designed to be lightweight enough for older machines.
