Best Linux Distro for Hosting a Private VPN

I'm trying to set up a private VPN for my laptop and phone to use when I'm on restricted networks. It doesn't need to be extremely powerful, so I'm thinking of running it on an older computer from around 2007, but I could use a newer one from about 2014 if needed. I'm looking for a secure, free, and easy-to-use option. What Linux distribution would work best for this?

Check out the distro selection page on our wiki for guidance! And remember, it’s a good idea to take regular backups, test things in a VM, and fully understand commands before hitting Enter!

You could really go with any distro; it’s not that crucial. Just pick one you’re comfortable with. If you don’t need any extra features, Arch Linux could be your best bet.

Honestly, it doesn't matter much which distro you choose. Debian is a solid option for setting up a VPN. But if you want something simpler, you could just go with Tailscale and achieve similar results without needing a full Linux setup.

I'm really new to this, so if I go with Arch, will I need to configure it during setup, or can I do it through a GUI? Does it have to be the official Arch, or can I use any arch-based distro? Any tutorials out there that aren't just trying to sell me a VPN? Thanks a ton!
