I'm working on a budget build for an HP office desktop that has the Intel square four-screw mounting system and an AM4 socket. I know that typically Intel coolers aren't compatible with AMD CPUs due to different mounting hardware, but I'm wondering if I can use the Intel cooler I have since the AM4 coolers I bought don't fit at all. Are there any specific compatibility issues I should be aware of?

In general, stock coolers usually won't work across platforms. However, most aftermarket coolers are designed to be compatible with both Intel and AMD sockets. So, if you’re looking at something like an aftermarket tower cooler, you should be good to go!
I had a similar situation with my Lenovo desktop. I had an AMD CPU but the Intel mounting holes. I ended up using a Thermalright Assassin King cooler, and it actually worked pretty well. Just make sure to check your screw lengths and use the correct spacers for AMD!
You could also check with the manufacturer if it's a Noctua cooler—sometimes they'll send you the necessary mounting hardware for free, which could save you some hassle!
It really depends on the cooler model you have. Some do allow for swapping between Intel and AMD platforms if you have the right mounting hardware. Since your setup is pretty unique, if you can't find any compatible mounts for your cooler, you might be stuck trying to fabricate something yourself.
That's what I was thinking too! Just double-check those coolers before giving up.
It all boils down to whether the cooler you have has an adapter for both chipsets. If it’s versatile enough, you might be in luck!

That's helpful! I guess it's all about getting the right parts and being careful with the fit.
