Can I Adjust Partition Sizes in a Dual Boot Setup with Windows and Linux?

I'm setting up a dual boot with cachyOS and Windows 11 on the same drive, but I'm unsure about how to allocate my Linux partition. What if I want to change the partition sizes later on? Also, will I be able to access my Windows files from Linux, or will they be completely off-limits?

You can definitely access files on your Windows partition from Linux without any hassle! Linux can read those partitions just fine. However, getting into Linux from Windows can be trickier unless you install third-party drivers for Linux filesystems on Windows.

Absolutely, you can mount and read Windows partitions from Linux. Reading Linux partitions in Windows requires some third-party software; one option is Freeware Linux Reader, which is pretty reliable. Regarding partition sizes, while you can technically shrink your Windows partition and expand your Linux partition, it does require specific tools to do it right since Windows and Linux format their partitions differently. It’s best to plan your storage upfront to avoid complications later on whenever you need to expand your Linux partition.

Thanks for the info! I think I’ll keep the Windows partition light and give Linux more space since I plan to transition fully to it later.

If you want full write access to your Windows files from Linux, make sure to disable fast startup in Windows. For resizing partitions, tools like GParted or KParted are usually included in most Linux install ISOs. Just remember, you’ll need to boot from the ISO to unmount partitions; you can’t do it while operating normally. Just a heads up: while there are drivers to access Linux files from Windows, I’m not a fan of that for security reasons!
