Can I Apply for Developer Roles with a UI/UX Title?

Hey everyone! I'm currently working as a UI/UX Designer, but in reality, I've been focusing entirely on front-end development using React, HTML/CSS, and JavaScript. The title assigned to me doesn't match my actual work, and now I'm planning to apply for developer positions. I'm curious if having a UI/UX Designer title will confuse recruiters or hurt my chances. Should I adjust my resume to reflect my real development experience? Has anyone faced a similar issue where their job title didn't represent their work? I'd appreciate any tips on how to position myself better in my applications. Thanks!

Honestly, if your title doesn't align with what you do, go ahead and change it on your resume. If you're still with the company, it might be worth asking them to update it internally too. It's surprising that you weren't doing any design work at all! Do you have any idea why they gave you that title?

I've seen this situation a lot! Recruiters tend to use titles for initial screening, so having 'UI/UX Designer' might cause some confusion or lead to you being overlooked if they’re searching specifically for a 'Front-end Developer.' It could really help to highlight your dev skills right at the top of your resume. Maybe something like 'Front-end Developer (officially UI/UX Designer)' followed by your skills and projects. Also, if you can get a recommendation from your manager that explains your actual responsibilities, that would be beneficial.

Titles really don't mean much; the key is your experience. Just put whatever fits the role you’re applying for. If you’re on LinkedIn, don’t hesitate to label yourself as a 'software engineer' instead. There's no industry standard for these titles anyway!

Exactly! Titles can vary so much from one company to another that it's often more about the skills you showcase than the title itself.
