I recently had my phone stolen, along with my wallet and headphones, and a friend lent me their old iPhone 12. However, my Apple ID is linked to my old Belgian phone number, even though I moved back to America last year and my current number is American. Since I'm waiting for my Apple ID recovery to complete, I can't send iMessages or download any apps, which is a problem because I need a way to access my bank accounts while I wait for my new cards to arrive. I was wondering if it's okay to create a new Apple ID just to download essential transit and banking apps, or would that interfere with the recovery of my old account?

You can definitely create a new Apple ID without messing up the recovery process for your old account. Since you don't want to wait, just use the temporary account for now. Once you regain access to your original account, keep in mind that if you've downloaded apps using the new ID, you might need that temp Apple ID password to update them. If you want to fully transition to the recovered account later, you could either delete those apps and redownload them or do a complete erase and set up everything with the recovered account. The latter is a bit extreme, but it can also help you restore your iCloud backup from your lost phone if you need that.
Thanks for the info!

That makes sense! I think I’ll opt for the extreme route and just erase everything when I get my old account back. For now, though, getting access to my messages and bank app is crucial. I was worried about linking my new number to a new Apple ID while also trying to change the recovery account, so I'm glad to hear it won't complicate things.
