Can I Mix Different RAM Speeds in My PC Build?

I'm new to PC building and looking to upgrade my setup. I currently have 16GB of DDR4 RAM running at 3000MT/s from Corsair. I'm considering getting an additional 16GB kit that's rated for 3200MT/s, but I'm unsure if mixing these two sets will cause any problems. I know they will likely run at the slower speed of 3000MHz, but I'm worried there might be other issues, like compatibility or stability that I'm not aware of. Any advice?

It's true that DDR4 can handle mixing a bit better than DDR5, but it comes with its own challenges. You might have to tweak your RAM settings for stability. Just be ready for some trial and error to get everything to cooperate.

Mixing RAM kits can sometimes work, but there's no guarantee. In your case, both kits would likely run at 3000MT/s if they do get along. Consider buying from a place with a good return policy just in case things don’t work out. Alternatively, it might be simpler to sell your current RAM and invest in a matching 2x16GB kit for better stability and performance.

Best practice is to avoid mixing different RAM kits due to potential instability. The worst-case scenario could be that your system won’t boot at all. If you do try it, manually configuring the RAM speed might be necessary, and be prepared for possible default speeds dropping to 2133MT/s.

Generally, mixing RAM kits is not a great idea. The best-case scenario is that it runs at 3000MHz, but the more probable outcome is that you might see reduced speeds, possibly as low as 2133MHz. Just remember to keep an eye on compatibility regarding timings; differing CAS latencies can create issues.
