Can I run Windows apps and games on Linux?

I'm curious about running Windows applications and games on Linux, specifically using tools like Wine, WinApps, and WinBoat. I recently started using Pop!_OS, and while I know online games with kernel anti-cheat won't work, I'm interested in playing titles like Cyberpunk, GTA V, and Red Dead Redemption 2. Is it really possible to get these games running smoothly?

You can run many Windows applications on Linux, but not all of them work perfectly. Wine is known to be a bit hit or miss; sometimes it works well, but other times the performance can be quite poor. Since you're using Pop!_OS, which is a Linux distribution, keep in mind that it's very different from Windows, which can lead to challenges when trying to run Windows software.

Honestly, some games work great on Wine and Proton, while others just won't run at all. It's all about compatibility. For example, checking ProtonDB can help you see how each game might perform on Linux. Just keep in mind that Linux isn't Windows, and not every app will work. You might also consider setting up a virtual machine if you need to run something that just won't play nice with Linux.

Good point! Using a VM can be resource-intensive, but at least it offers a Windows environment for apps that are critical.

It's possible to run some apps with Wine and Proton, but there are limitations. WinApps and WinBoat use a Windows container, meaning it's like running a mini Windows inside Linux. This might work for office applications like PowerPoint or Adobe products, but games with kernel-level anti-cheat could be problematic, even if technically they could run.

Yeah, I've heard similar things about gaming performance using those tools. Better to check out ProtonDB for specific game compatibility!
