Hey everyone! I'm looking to set up a Linux server but the only computer I can use is my laptop, which I typically rely on when I can't access my main machine. Is it possible to install an operating system like Ubuntu Server on an external hard drive and use it without interfering with my laptop's regular functioning? Additionally, could I switch that external hard drive between different computers down the line? I'm considering getting a dedicated laptop for this purpose, but it might take me some time to find one. Any advice would be fantastic!

It’s definitely doable to install Ubuntu on an external drive and boot from it. Just keep in mind that performance might be affected due to slower disk I/O. Also, when you do this, it’s a good idea to unplug your internal drive while installing to prevent accidentally wiping your main OS. After installation, you can reconnect the internal drive without any problems! Some folks also suggest using something like VirtualBox for easier access without needing to reboot. Just think about what you'll mainly be using the server for, as that can influence your setup!
What if I just want it for simple applications, like cloud storage?
