Can I Use My Old Domain with WordPress for a New Website?

Hey everyone! A few weeks back, I was using IONOS for my website, but their prices are pretty steep for the limited features they offer. I decided to cancel my website while keeping the domain for a low fee. My question is, can I build a new website using WordPress while still keeping my old domain? Will I need to pay WordPress to do this, or is there a simpler and more affordable option out there, especially for someone like me who's not very tech-savvy? I'm open to German alternatives, too, since I don't have much time to learn programming, but I do have some experience with WordPress and other website builders.

Hosting WordPress yourself is free and you can use your domain. But if you want reliable hosting, check out Hetzner—they have great prices, are based in Germany, and they provide easy templates for installing WordPress. That way you can get everything set up without too much hassle!

I really recommend using NixiHost for hosting your WordPress site. It costs about $6/month, which is a fraction of what you were paying IONOS. Plus, they’ve kept their prices stable over the last four years I've been with them! They offer easy WordPress installation, and you can keep your existing IONOS domain by just updating its DNS settings to point to NixiHost. You’ll do great with WordPress!

You can either pay WordPress to host your site and link your domain to it, or use their free version which is yourwebsite.wordpress.org. But if you want something more custom, I suggest getting a cheap hosting plan with Softaculous from a provider like krystal.uk. They have one-click installations, and you can point your IONOS nameservers to them. Just remember to keep your WordPress updated to avoid security issues!

From my experience, self-hosting can be tricky and you risk getting hacked if you don’t stay on top of plugin updates. I’d recommend going for WordPress.org instead, which is more secure. It’s been a while since I’ve set it up, but changing your domain settings there should tie your old domain to your new site just fine. Good luck!

Yes, you can keep your domain and build a new site with WordPress! You don’t have to pay for WordPress unless you choose their hosted plans, which can be pricey. A better option is to use a reliable hosting provider that offers one-click WordPress installs and tools for beginners. I’d suggest Hostinger; they're affordable and beginner-friendly, plus they have drag-and-drop builders if coding isn’t your thing. If you use their referral link, there’s even a discount!
