Can Malware Spread from Public Wi-Fi to My Phone and Other Devices?

I'm a bit worried about the security risks after connecting my Android phone to a public Wi-Fi. I had to enter an email or code to connect through a captive portal, but I didn't finish that step, so my phone just showed 'Connected / No Internet.' It was also on airplane mode the whole time. Now, I'm concerned that even though I didn't provide any info or download anything, my phone could have picked up malware just from that connection. If there is malware, could it spread to my home router when I reconnect at home, and then potentially affect my other devices? Any thoughts on whether this scenario is likely? Thanks for any insights!

I NEVER use public Wi-Fi unless I have to! It can be risky, but if you didn’t download anything or click suspicious links, your chances of getting malware from just connecting are pretty low. Malware spreading from your phone to your router would require it to exploit a specific weakness in the router's software, and those are rare. You're likely safe, but it's always good to be cautious. Maybe just avoid public Wi-Fi in the future?

Technically, yes, malware can spread through public Wi-Fi, but in your case, it seems very unlikely. Just connecting without completing the login usually isn't enough to pick something up. You'd need to download something or visit a malicious site for malware to really get onto your phone. Also, since your phone was in airplane mode, that adds another layer of safety. You're probably fine! But if you're still concerned, a good practice is to restart your phone and router when you get home.

No way! Just by connecting to a Wi-Fi network without transferring any data, your phone shouldn’t pick up malware. It’s even less likely with airplane mode activated. If you want to ease your worries, just do a quick restart of both your phone and router when you get home. You'll be good to go!
