Considering a Career Shift to DevOps: Where to Start with Linux?

I'm currently working in L2 Desktop Support and I've developed an interest in Linux. I'm studying for the Linux+ certification since my company covers it, but I'm uncertain about pursuing Red Hat certifications. I'm also contemplating a path toward system administration. However, I've noticed that many of these roles are shifting towards DevOps. Should I focus on DevOps instead? I'm also considering exploring Cloud Engineering or Architecture. Any guidance would be really appreciated!

Knowing Linux is a game changer for cloud and DevOps roles. You'll frequently encounter resource management and shell scripting in your day-to-day tasks. If your company offers Linux certification courses, take them! It's an opportunity you shouldn't miss.

Getting hands-on experience with Linux is vital. It really sets a solid foundation for most DevOps and cloud-related jobs.

I get that! Any suggestions on how to gain that experience?

Definitely focus on learning Linux, Ansible, and Terraform—they're super significant in the field. Also, Kubernetes is hugely in demand right now, so I’d recommend checking out Docker first and then moving to Kubernetes. Don't forget about Bash scripting, and Python is a great addition for DevOps roles. Just take your time; understanding Linux requires some good hands-on practice.

If you're leaning toward a DevOps career, it’s best to dive into tech stacks like Terraform and Ansible. You’ll pick up the Linux skills along the way, so don’t stress about that right now!

Just a heads up, the RHCSA now covers containerization and automation tools like Ansible, which are crucial skills to have. That might be an ideal starting point for those looking to get into DevOps.
