Hey everyone, I'm a 3D artist and I'm planning to upgrade my setup from an Intel 12600KF to an AMD 9800X3D to fully take advantage of my RTX 4090. I've got tons of addons and plugins already installed and would really like to keep my current Windows installation. Is it possible to switch CPU brands without formatting my drive?

You might not need to format your system completely. There’s an option in Windows that lets you refresh your files while keeping your personal data safe. Just remember, since you're swapping out your motherboard, it won't be as simple as just swapping the CPU.

I personally upgraded from an i7-3820 to a 3600X and then to a 5900X without having to do a clean install of Windows. Most issues people seem to face when switching to AMD are usually driver-related, especially if you're moving from Intel graphics to AMD. Just use DDU to clean up the old drivers. Also, watch out for the MediaTek WiFi/Bluetooth issues that crop up with some AMD setups; Intel typically had better hardware for those. So, be prepared for some troubleshooting but it should work out fine!

So your main concern is the motherboard since you're changing both the CPU and mobo. Honestly, it’s a mixed bag. Some folks have no issues with CPU swaps, especially if they stay on the same board, but switching motherboards can introduce problems. Just keep your options open for a clean install in case things go sideways. Also, check if you need a new Windows license!

Yeah, you won't know how smooth the transition will be until you give it a shot. Just be ready for the possibility of needing a clean install. Better safe than sorry!
