Do I need to upgrade my power supply for gaming?

I recently built my first PC and I'm eager to dive into some of the latest games. My friend suggested that I might need to upgrade my power supply, but I'm not really sure about that or which one to choose. I could also use some advice about storage options and whether it's worth upgrading that as well. Here are my current specs: 2TB SSD, AMD B650 motherboard, 800W 80 Plus Gold power supply, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080 with 16GB GDDR7, 32GB DDR5 5600MHz RAM, and an AMD Ryzen 9 9900X processor. Thanks for any help!

For your NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080, an 850W power supply is recommended for optimal performance. Since you currently have an 800W unit, it might be adequate for now, especially since the 9900X consumes less power than higher models. However, if you're looking to future-proof your build or if you're experiencing power-related issues, an upgrade could be worthwhile. As for your 2TB SSD, it seems like a solid choice unless you’re working with heavy video files; in that case, you'd need more storage.

The recommendation for 850W mainly applies to the founders edition with a 9950X, which is more power-hungry. Your 9900X is fine on an 800W unless you're under heavy load.

Yeah, I wouldn't rush to replace it unless you're having specific issues. 2TB is a good amount unless you're doing a lot of gaming or content creation.

If your system runs fine with the current specs, it's generally better to stick with what you have unless you encounter issues. The 800W is at the lower limit for your setup, but unless you are planning on significant upgrades in the future, replacing it right now might not be necessary. Regarding storage, it really depends on how much data you typically manage. If you're just playing games, 2TB is probably sufficient for most users.

Right? Unless you're handling large projects or managing lots of files, you might not even need a bigger SSD.

Exactly, just keep an eye on your storage needs as you start downloading and playing more games.

Did you buy a pre-built PC? If yes, an 850W power supply is the bare minimum recommended for the RTX 5080. There's also the option to undervolt the GPU, allowing you to run on your existing power supply without needing an upgrade. As for the SSD, make sure it's an M.2 NVMe with at least Gen 3 for optimal speed; it should serve you well without needing to change it right now.

Good point! Just check the model of your SSD to confirm it meets those specs.

Yeah, and if you find out what you have, we can help gauge whether an upgrade is worth it.
