I recently upgraded my GPU from a 3070 to a 5070, and now my PC keeps freezing hard while I'm gaming. I've gone through a fresh driver install, updated my chipset drivers, reseated the GPU, and I'm currently trying to change the PCIe configuration to gen 4 instead of gen 5 since that's one of the few suggestions I found online. Honestly, I'm at my wit's end! Here's my build for reference:
- CPU: I-7 12700kf
- RAM: 16 GB DDR5 Kingston Fury
- Cooling: Kraken 280 mm AIO
- GPU: PNY RTX 5070
- Motherboard: ASUS PRIME Z790-V WIFI Intel Z790 LGA 1700 ATX
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

It sounds like you might be facing a power supply issue. A 750-watt PSU should typically be sufficient, but it might not be delivering the necessary power under load. Have you checked your power supply’s ratings?
What wattage is your PSU? Also, does the freezing happen during stress tests? If you swap in a different GPU, does it still freeze? Pay attention to when it freezes too; is it on certain games or when temperatures rise? It might be worth considering that the GPU could be defective, and you may need to look into a replacement.
It's frozen during a couple of games, I have a 750-watt PSU, and initially, I hadn't changed anything. The freezing gets worse under load, especially mid-game, but after switching to gen 4, I managed to finish one full match. Would it be smart to use a 3D benchmarking demo for stress testing?
Changing the PCIe settings is a good move, but if you still have your old 3070, try reinstalling it to see if the freezing persists. It could just be that the 5070 is faulty—sometimes it happens with new hardware!
The 3070 was working perfectly before. I don’t get why switching the PCIe would cause issues. Could it really be a defective GPU?

Yeah, I figured 750 watts would be enough. It was working fine with the 3070.
