Do I Need to Worry About Which RAM Slot I Use?

I have a motherboard model DAOZ8YMB8F0 REV: F and two RAM slots, but I'm only using one RAM stick. I read that it might not matter which slot I use, but I couldn't locate my motherboard manual for verification. The RAM stick originally came in the rightmost slot, but there's some residue on one of the contacts there. Also, there's no labeling around the RAM slots that I can see. I'm very new to handling electronics, so if there's anything else I should add or if I'm missing something obvious, please let me know!

If you're having trouble finding the manual, look closely near the RAM slots. There should be markings like DIMM0 or DIMM1. Generally, you should place the RAM stick in the first slot (often labeled as zero). If it doesn't work, it might beep and fail to boot, so just switch the RAM to the other slot at that point. Also, I suggest getting a second RAM stick because dual-channel memory can give you a performance boost compared to just one stick with double the memory.

I tried the leftmost slot, but it seems the RAM can only fit upside down there. Is that normal, or should I avoid using that slot?

If the RAM fits only that way, it could be a sign that slot is not meant for it. Usually, RAM slots should allow a standard orientation for installation, so it might be best to stick with the other slot if you can.

Most motherboards have instructions printed near the RAM slots. If there's no indication, it usually won't harm anything to use either slot.

Check if you can find your motherboard manual online—just search for your motherboard model followed by 'manual'. It's usually a good resource for troubleshooting.
