I've been watching a bunch of videos on how to install Linux, and they all seem to use a USB flash drive. But when I posted about how to download Linux, nobody mentioned needing one. So, is a USB flash drive necessary for the installation process?

Technically, you can use other options like a DVD, but I think you'll find a USB drive is the best way to go. Just keep in mind that using a USB will erase any existing data on it. Also, there’s the option of trying Linux in a virtual machine if you don’t have a USB handy.

You don’t need a USB to download Linux, but to install it, you’ll want some kind of external media like a USB or a DVD to flash the installation ISO onto. A USB is just the most practical method these days.

Yeah, you’ll want a USB drive if you're planning to install Linux. It's definitely the easiest way to go. If you have an optical drive, burning the ISO onto a DVD is also an option, but USB sticks are generally faster and more convenient.

You could skip the USB if you're just downloading Linux, but you'll definitely need one when it comes time to install it. I recommend using an 8GB USB stick, which are super cheap these days. If you're new to it, consider dual-booting alongside your current OS so you can get comfortable without disrupting your work.

Installing without a USB is tricky. While you can use other methods, a USB is definitely the easiest for beginners. If you're not ready to fully commit, though, you could use WSL on Windows for a taste of Linux.
