Does a Windows factory reset get rid of potential viruses?

I recently tried to install a download tool called 'J Downloader.' While doing so, it prompted me to install some additional software, which I declined. However, it still ended up installing AVG antivirus on my computer. After uninstalling AVG and cleaning up temporary files, I ran into trouble when trying to delete a registry key associated with it, leading me to believe I might have a virus. So, I went ahead and did a Windows factory reset using the 'cloud install' option. Was this the right move? I'm worried there might be hidden malware since Windows Defender didn't detect anything.

Using a factory reset is a solid approach when you're worried about malware. However, a USB stick with installation media is usually the preferred way to reinstall Windows. You might also want to run a scan with Malwarebytes again just to be safe.

It's more likely you're dealing with a Potentially Unwanted Program (PUP) rather than a virus. For thoroughness, I recommend using Revo Uninstaller to clean up any leftover files from AVG or that J Downloader. And yeah, just take your time when installing software next time to avoid these scenarios.
