I'm really interested in learning Machine Learning but I'm feeling pretty overwhelmed. I stumbled upon a video that mentioned how tough it can be to land a job in this field, and after doing some more research, I noticed there seems to be a lot of competition. I'm starting to wonder if I should reconsider my goals. Is this just my anxiety talking, or should I think about changing my direction? I'd appreciate any insights or advice!

If you already have a stable source of income, consider just learning ML as a hobby. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that! A lot of jobs in ML or AI often require a PhD, so keep that in mind.

That's true, but I don't have a long-term plan right now.

When I first got into programming, I checked out ML too. It seems location plays a big role; there are opportunities in places like London, but where I am, the options are pretty slim. I ended up going with web development instead since relocating wasn't feasible.

Pretty much every specialty has competition if you wish to make it your career. But if you're just doing it for fun, there's zero competition! It's all about whether you're up for the challenge or think about giving up. There are also many jobs that don't require as much competition. If you prefer a more laid-back environment, maybe look into something different.

There's definitely competition in ML since it's a hot field, but if you’re good, you'll find opportunities. Usually, having a Master's degree and some solid research experience, plus publishing in reputable conferences, helps a lot. If you can pursue this path, go for it! Otherwise, having it as a hobby is a great alternative if you enjoy it and aren't aiming for a career.

Machine Learning has shifted quite a bit from its novelty phase into embedded systems engineering. Some companies are developing frameworks and automation tools for creating ML devices, so there's still interest, but the landscape is changing. If you plan to pursue an advanced degree and are good at math, chances are you’ll be fine. It’s a popular field, so if you're determined and put in the effort, you can certainly succeed. Just a heads up, if you're not looking at advanced degrees, finding work might be tough. This is specifically regarding the job market in the US, though.

It’s not as if only the best are going to get jobs, but think of it like becoming an architect or a dentist. If you're going through a reputable program, it can be straightforward, but it won’t be easy if you’re just dabbling. You can’t just pick it up casually and expect to succeed without real effort.
