Feeling Anxious About Job Prospects as a Comp Sci Freshman?

I'm currently a freshman studying computer science at a university that isn't considered a top-tier school. I've been hearing a lot of chatter about AI taking jobs, which makes me anxious about my future employment. I don't fully buy into these fears about AI, but I'm nonetheless worried I won't be able to secure a job after graduation. At the moment, I'm working on the NeetCode 150 problems and starting a few projects. My goal is to land an internship by the summer of my sophomore year, otherwise I feel like I'll be behind. If anyone has advice or insights, I'd really appreciate it! I'm super passionate about coding and hope to turn it into a career.

Focus on what truly matters: your education and skills. Build projects that interest you, and attend meetups or hackathons to network. The more you engage with the community and improve your skills, the easier it will be to find a job when the time comes. Keep up the good work!

Why are you so terrified of not landing a job? Remember, not every CS grad goes into programming, and that’s totally okay! Focus on your love for coding rather than the job market. You’re in a learning phase, so make the most of it—don’t get caught up in the stresses of internships.

I understand your fears, but remember that grades and school prestige aren’t everything. My niece wasn't able to get into UCLA like she wanted, but she found success elsewhere and did very well. The key is to focus on doing your best at your current school, and you never know where that can lead you!

Don't stress too much! Generally, students don’t start interning until their junior year, so give yourself some grace. While AI is becoming a thing, it's not going to replace everyone—only those who aren’t keeping up. Just focus on your studies and projects, and you’ll be fine!

It's totally normal to feel anxious, but try to focus on what you can control. Continue building projects and sharing them on GitHub— even small projects can make a big impact. You're already on the right track with NeetCode! Just keep putting in the effort, and the job offers will come in time.
