Game Performance Deteriorates Over Time—What Could Be the Cause?

I've been experiencing a frustrating issue where the performance of my games decreases significantly the longer I play. After running benchmarks, I found out that everything seemed fine, except for the RAM, which I replaced. However, the issue continues. I initially suspected it might be overheating since my CPU (3600x) sits at about 74 degrees Celsius under low load and only reaches about 78 degrees in-game, despite the performance drop. I generally play less demanding games like League of Legends and have ordered a new cooler to address this, but I'm wondering if the temperature readings might indicate a software issue instead. Any insights or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Your CPU's Tjunction max is 95°C, so 78°C shouldn't be a problem. What kind of power supply are you using, and what's your GPU? I've heard some NVIDIA drivers have issues where fans don't spin properly and could be capping the voltage, which might cause performance dips.

It sounds like checking out that new cooler is a good move. Replacing the RAM first is an interesting choice. Have you thought about reapplying thermal paste on your CPU? Oh, and what graphics card are you using? Since your temps don't exceed 78 degrees, overheating might not be the main issue, unless your temp readings are off.

Try downloading HWINFO64 and run it in sensor-only mode. Also, grab CPU-Z and run the stress test to check min/max temps. It really does sound like thermal throttling. If your system is around five years old, consider replacing the thermal paste on both the CPU and GPU.

Have you tried restarting your PC? Sometimes a quick reboot can help improve performance if it's been running for a while.

This could very well be a software issue, possibly a memory leak that's causing the slowdown over time.

Honestly, having your PC idle at 74°C is definitely concerning. You might want to look into that further.
