Help! My Kid Racked Up $8K in In-App Purchases – Any Way to Get a Refund?

I recently got new iPhones and unfortunately, it seems parental controls didn't transfer over to the new devices, or my son might have changed the settings himself, which allowed him to make purchases without my confirmation. He didn't have a payment method linked to his phone, but I discovered he spent a whopping $8,000 on various things such as Robux, YouTube super chats, and Clash Royale items. I reached out to Apple for refunds, but out of 112 requests, only one was denied when I appealed. Is there any way to recover the money without risking my Apple ID getting banned?

If it were me, I’d probably try a chargeback through my credit card, even knowing it could lead to an account ban. Just make sure to back up everything from iCloud since it's likely a ban will follow. $8K is a lot to lose!

I totally get the frustration, but it doesn't seem fair to shift the blame entirely. Parents need to have controls in place, especially with kids who might not fully grasp the implications of in-app purchases. Have you thought about how long this spent before you noticed? You could set notifications for large purchases on your accounts.

Sorry to say, but it seems there's really no recourse here. Apple tends to refuse refunds once the purchase is made, especially for in-game items.

Unfortunately, it looks like you're out of luck. Since you've already appealed and had your claims denied, Apple's decision seems to be final. You could consider disputing the charges with your bank, but just know that it might end with your Apple account getting banned anyway.

I think discussing the responsibility of money with your child could be key here. Kids often don’t understand how money works; I had to learn that lesson too. Maybe setting up better parental controls in the future could prevent this from happening again.
