How can a complete beginner transition into a DevOps career?

Hey everyone! I'm reaching out for some advice on breaking into the DevOps field. I have a biomedical science degree and experience in analytical and problem-solving skills, but I'm a total novice when it comes to tech. I haven't had any exposure to coding, Python, automation, cloud computing, or DevOps tools yet.

For the past month, I've been diving into research about DevOps and I'm really drawn to the field. I'm eager to learn, build skills, and eventually land an entry-level or junior position to grow my career.

What I'm specifically looking for are:
- Reliable guides or learning paths for complete beginners. Any structured courses, websites, or programs you think would be helpful?
- Recommendations for quality online courses, platforms, or YouTube series that can lay a strong foundation for a job.
- If you were in my shoes aiming for a junior role, what would you prioritize learning first?

I want to learn effectively and apply my knowledge hands-on, so I'm planning to work on projects and labs to demonstrate my skills to potential employers. I'd really appreciate any tips or experiences, especially from those who've come into DevOps from non-CS backgrounds. Thanks a ton!

Start by learning Linux inside and out. It’s crucial for DevOps and will serve you well in almost any IT role.

To start off, here's a straightforward path:
1. Gain some experience as a developer first—aim for at least junior to intermediate level.
2. Learn system administration skills.
3. Transition into DevOps from there. It’s a progression that makes a lot of sense!

Totally! I appreciate the roadmap. Just to clarify, do you have any recommended sites or structured learning paths that actually lead to jobs? I’m looking for something that starts from zero and guides you to at least a junior position with real employment success stories.

+1 on this! I found the same approach helpful!

Instead of aiming strictly for a DevOps role right away, try to explore IT or development more broadly. As you learn, you might find other areas that intrigue you just as much. Focusing on a specific path can be limiting at the start.

Just a heads up, DevOps can be quite complex—it's not really aimed at beginners, as it requires solid development and sysadmin experience. Check out this roadmap I found: https://roadmap.sh/devops. It’s a nice visual guide that links to more detailed resources to help you understand the necessary skills.

Thanks! I’ll definitely take a look at that. I need all the guidance I can get!
