I'm trying to figure out how to establish a wired connection between two laptops, but one of them doesn't have an Ethernet port. I'm curious about why a USB-C to USB-C cable doesn't work for this purpose. Any suggestions?

Getting a USB to Ethernet adapter is probably your best bet. It's straightforward and will allow you to connect the laptops easily.
Using a USB hub that has an Ethernet port is another solution. That way you can connect both laptops while keeping it wired.
You might also want to consider a USB bridging cable. It can help with direct connections between two computers.
You can create an ad hoc network connection if you're comfortable with some setup. It allows file sharing without a dedicated cable connection.
If you're looking to transfer files, have you thought about doing it wirelessly instead? It can be simpler, especially if both laptops are on the same home network.
