How can I create an old-school, campy website design?

I'm looking to design a website that has an old-school, campy vibe, similar to Tumblr aesthetics. I have a bit of experience with WordPress and Squarespace but I'm not sure how to achieve this look easily. I came across this website [link to example] which captures the feel I'm going for—lots of GIFs and a nostalgic style. Is there a straightforward way to do this, or do I need to learn some coding basics?

If you’re sticking with WordPress or Squarespace, you'll find they have some limitations with themes and custom code. For WordPress, a blank theme with Gutenberg can help since it lets you mix in custom HTML and CSS. On Squarespace, you can add custom code too, but you’re still working within their layout constraints. It’s doable, just be prepared to dig through templates to find something solid!

It looks like the site you shared uses a lot of CSS to achieve that DIY, low-fi aesthetic. Basic HTML and custom styles can give you that retro look very easily! Check out this code snippet for inspiration; it’s simple but effective!

Honestly, if you want that vintage style, it might be easier to learn some basic HTML and CSS. Trying to find a website builder with filters that mimic old designs can be a lot of work. Plus, it can be fun to learn, and it demystifies a lot of web concepts!

Agreed! Using basic code can save you tons of headaches compared to trying to tweak a builder.

Creating a site like that isn’t too tough if you're open to coding. I bet you could whip something together in a day or two if it’s just basic styles and images. Here’s a great example of how simple HTML could get you there—just focus on bright backgrounds and random images!

To really nail that old-school vibe, focus on the content and layout! Think about adding classic touches like a visitor counter, 'under construction' graphics, lots of animated GIFs, and maybe even some retro browser alerts. It’s those little details that bring the campy feel to life!
