How Can I Ensure My Backups Are Reliable and Effective?

Hi everyone! I'm Benjamin, a founder and freelancer with a background in web development agencies and startups. Over the years, I've faced numerous challenges with losing production data often due to unreliable backups. It's alarming to realize that only about half of backups are restored successfully, and many teams don't conduct regular restore tests; they just trust that everything's fine because of a green checkmark.

I've seen that existing solutions like Veeam and Commvault are great but mainly cater to large enterprises and work only within their own environments. For small to medium-sized enterprises using tools like PostgreSQL on S3, there aren't many options available. That's what led me to start developing RestoreProof.

The tool's idea is to deploy a runner within your infrastructure that retrieves and restores backups to an isolated container, performs checks like SQL queries and file integrity, then generates a signed report. The report also serves compliance purposes while ensuring that your backups genuinely work.

My question for you all is: how do you currently manage backup testing? Do you perform regular restore tests, or do you prefer to wait until an issue arises? I'd love to hear how different teams approach this.

I recommend looking into more AWS managed services. They typically provide reliable backup and restore options. However, even those can fail you, so do regular tests to verify data integrity.

It's definitely critical to test your backups regularly. We're automated our backup restores on a staging system, so if staging works, it means the backups work too. This saves us from potential disasters later on.

I hear you; I’ve been in this field for a long time and thankfully never lost production data. We do regular restores and regularly check our backups to avoid any issues.

Yeah, it’s surprising how many backups aren't checked. I set up a Lambda script for automated checks and also create Jira tickets for review, which helps keep everything on track.

It's interesting to hear about your tool, but I think a lot of teams struggle with backup validation because the details are often not fully accounted for, like having a thorough restore playbook. An automated drill won't address everything.
