How can I fix the red CPU light on my motherboard?

I recently upgraded to a Ryzen 9600X, which required me to get a new motherboard and RAM for the AM5 and DDR5 platform, specifically the B650 Steel Legend WiFi and 32GB of TeamGroup RAM. After finishing the build, my motherboard is showing a solid red CPU light all the time, and depending on how I configure the RAM, there's also a blinking DRAM light. I've searched for solutions but most sources indicate that something must be broken. I've tried reseating the CPU, rearranging the RAM sticks, and updating the motherboard BIOS, but nothing seems to work. The fans are spinning and all connections appear to be secure. I'm at a loss! Should I just give up and return these parts? It's hard to determine if the issue is with the RAM, CPU, or motherboard.

It sounds like something's definitely not right. You need to pinpoint which red light is active and tackle that issue, but it seems like you’re already aware of the CPU indicator being the problematic one. I get how frustrating that must be!

I get that you mentioned the CPU indicator in your post title, but it’s tough to troubleshoot without knowing specifically what's wrong – especially if it could be any of those components.

With a Ryzen 9600X and a B650 board, it's quite likely a BIOS update is needed since B650s often default to being ready for the 7000 series. If you’ve tried different BIOS versions already, it might be smart to return or swap out some components. I know some users have struggled with memory training on AM5 systems. A tip I found helpful is to run with just one RAM stick; it sometimes speeds things up. I remember leaving the rig for a while and then coming back to find it had booted!

I’ll take another shot at the BIOS update, maybe I missed something earlier. Luckily, I got it from Amazon, and the return window is open until the end of January, so I have a bit of time to try fixing it.

Have you checked the motherboard manual for what the light patterns indicate? Sometimes it gives clues on what might be malfunctioning. It could be hidden in there somewhere!

Unfortunately, the manual just acknowledges the existence of the CPU light but doesn’t explain what it means. It does mention that a blinking DRAM light is normal, but that's about it.

Did you manage to do the BIOS update using the flashback feature? Sometimes those boards need a specific update to work with certain CPUs, especially when using a B650 board with a Ryzen 5000 series chip. If you don’t know anyone with an AM5 Ryzen 7000 series CPU, I think AMD has a program that lends CPUs just for these cases.
