How Can I Handle a Huge AWS Bill as a College Student?

Hey everyone! I'm in a bit of a panic right now and could use some guidance. I was working on a cloud computing report for school and chose AWS for my project. Unfortunately, I set up a pricey RDS instance without understanding the costs involved, thinking it would only be for a day. Now, I've opened my AWS account to find a shocking bill of $1860 for November, plus around $100 for the first couple of days of December. I reached out to AWS support, explaining that I'm a student and provided proof along with the fact that I shut down the instance when I realized my mistake. However, the rep just kept asking for a reference and wasn't clear on my chances of getting credits or a waiver. I'm really overwhelmed by this bill, so if anyone has any tips or has been in a similar situation, I'd deeply appreciate your advice or even just some moral support. Thanks!

Man, that sounds super stressful! First off, don’t panic too much; you’ve got some options. Make sure to provide AWS with your enrollment records and explain your situation clearly. You can also mention that you've already stopped the service since you realized the mistake. That could help your case for a refund. They’ve been known to offer waivers in situations like this for students, so it’s definitely worth pushing for! Good luck!

Definitely keep following up with AWS. It might help to send them your class schedule or any proof of your project. I bet the $1860 isn’t much for them, so they might just waive it if you explain well enough. For future reference, consider setting up CloudWatch alerts to get notified about your spending to avoid another surprise like this!

Thanks for the tip on CloudWatch! I’ll definitely check that out. I just hope they can help with this bill first!
