I'm curious why some Azure services are still using the windows.net domain. Given that Azure is a distinct offering from Windows in the Microsoft ecosystem, it seems odd to me. Can anyone shed light on the reasoning behind this?

It would help to clarify with examples. For instance, storage accounts often run on core.windows.net, and that’s a direct link to the original Azure setup. The consistency helps with user recognition and system integration.

The use of windows.net really boils down to legacy reasons. Once those domains were established, it becomes really tricky to change them without causing disruptions for users.

Azure was initially branded as 'Windows Azure', so the use of the windows.net domain comes from that early identity. When Azure first launched, managing domains was simpler with that naming convention. Even after rebranding, they kept the windows.net domain because changing it would break existing customer setups.
