I've got Windows on drive C and my personal files stored on drive D. I really want to install Linux, but I'm worried about losing any of my data. Is there a safe way to go about it? Can I install Linux without affecting my existing setup?

Absolutely, it is possible! Just make sure to back up your important files first, even if you think they're safe. It's always good to have a backup. You never know!

If you're serious about dual booting, I’d recommend getting a second drive for Linux. Windows updates can mess with Linux bootloaders. Plus, if you format your data partition as NTFS, Linux can access it without any issues. Just remember to back up before diving in!

You're looking at setting up a dual boot system! Just ensure you have enough space and create a new partition for Linux. During installation, you'll have the option to set it up alongside Windows. It’ll create a boot menu that lets you choose between Windows and Linux at startup.

You'll want to clarify where you plan to install Linux. If you want to install on the same drive as Windows, you can shrink its partition to make space for Linux. If you're looking at your data drive, do the same there. But seriously, back up your important files before you start messing with partitions!

I plan to install it on whichever drive I need to, but I definitely don't want to lose the data on my D drive. I've got at least 30 GB free on both drives.

Even though you want to keep the data on the D drive, it's really a good idea to back things up. If your internet isn't great for cloud storage, maybe consider using an external drive or something until you have a stable connection.
