How Can I Learn to Love Coding After Four Years in the Game?

Asked By CodeWarrior42 On

I've been working with coding for four years now, primarily on school projects like a dating website, but I'm really struggling to connect with it. I want coding to be my career, but I have a hard time focusing, often losing interest after just an hour and scrolling through social media instead. I see others who are passionate and obsessed with coding, and I'm curious if anyone has found a way to develop a love for something they initially didn't enjoy. Any tips or experiences to share?

You might need to address that doomscrolling first. Consider blocking those distraction sites. Once you're not constantly tempted, you may find it easier to focus on coding. And if you still don’t find joy in it afterward, it might not be your calling, but tackling that social media habit will definitely help!

Yeah, I'm working on that now. I appreciate the advice!

Instead of trying to force yourself to love it, focus on why you want to code. Like, if it’s the creativity you crave, try building something unique that excites you! For example, I dived into game development because that was fun for me. Find your niche in coding, and you might just reignite that spark.

Thanks for the tips! I'll consider exploring different projects.

From my experience, once you tackle projects you're excited about, coding can become way more enjoyable. College coding felt tedious with small exercises, but I found fun once I worked on things I actually liked. Try to find something in coding that interests you personally!

Honestly, I think it comes down to whether you enjoy coding or not. Many folks stick with it for the paycheck and don’t produce much beyond tweaking existing code. There's nothing wrong with that if it pays the bills! Just recognize what motivates you in this field.

Interesting point! For me, I don't love it either, but I'm driven to be the best because it's the only thing I'm good at.

Fair enough, but I've seen those who love it might just be in it for the projects they truly enjoy.

Look, coding often involves a lot of mundane work—think business applications or testing code—so it’s normal for it to feel boring sometimes. Learning it can be exciting, but actually doing it might not always feel that way. If you're not loving it, that's okay!

This does sound like someone who got stuck in corporate hell—programming can still be fun!
