I'm new to freelancing and I'm really worried about getting scammed by clients after I deliver my work. I've had some bad experiences where clients question my trustworthiness and then demand I deliver the project first before discussing payment. What are some strategies I can use to avoid these situations?

Make sure you're not handing over the entire project folder before getting paid. If you're handling server management, you can always disable the site until payment arrives. Clients tend to move quickly when they realize they need the work you've done!

Don't deliver any work until you've received payment! Also, it's crucial to get a solid contract in place for every job. Contracts help protect you and set clear expectations.

That's great advice. Contracts are essential! Just remember that the contract's wording needs to be very clear to be effective.

Show your clients a preview of what they've paid for, but don’t give them full ownership until they’ve settled the bill. This way, you’re protecting your work while reminding them to pay.

I really wouldn't recommend working with clients who want to discuss payment only after the work is done. In my experience, that's a huge red flag. It usually leads to either no payment or a lot of hassle over fees.

I always ask for upfront payments for almost all my projects. I've been freelancing for a while now and I'm happy to provide references to potential clients. For larger projects, I usually request 50% upfront and the rest before I deliver anything. It really helps to build some trust right from the start!
