How can I set a default network printer for all users in a computer lab?

Hi everyone! I'm an IT Manager at a higher education institution, and I'm facing some printer setup challenges. I have a computer lab with 10 Windows machines that are used by different students who don't have admin rights. I need to configure each machine to automatically connect to a single network printer and make it the default printer, regardless of who logs in. Currently, I can't switch to solutions like PrinterLogic or Papercut due to budget constraints, but I plan to move to PrinterLogic in the future. I've spent a few days trying to figure this out, but I'm stuck. Any advice on how to make this work would be greatly appreciated!

If you're pressed for time, a quick fix could be to install the printer locally on one PC, then share it out. It’s not the most elegant solution, but it can work in a pinch.

Honestly, using GPO is really the easiest way to handle this kind of thing. You just set it and forget it!

You could also use PowerShell to script the printer setup! It can be a bit involved if you're not familiar with it, but once it's set up, it works seamlessly without needing user interaction.

Have you considered using Group Policy Objects (GPO)? If your computers are managed through Active Directory, you can deploy the printer by its IP address. It’s pretty straightforward, and it's a solid method without needing extra software.

I had the same situation a while back, and using GPO was definitely the way to go for me. It made things so much simpler!

I tried creating a GPO too, but I ran into an issue where "Set as Default Printer" was grayed out under Computer Configuration. It seems you might need to set it under User Configuration instead.
