How can I update the macOS on my older iMac?

I just picked up a 2014 iMac for a great price, and while it seems to work fine, I'm having trouble accessing some websites which require a newer version of macOS. I understand that I can't update to the absolute latest OS, but I'm not sure how to find the most up-to-date version compatible with my hardware. This is my first Mac, and I'm feeling a bit lost on how to proceed.

It depends on whether you have a MacBook, MacBook Pro, or an iMac. Since you've mentioned it's an iMac, that’s good to know! Check if you have the latest version installed for your model.

Yeah, it’s definitely an iMac, the one where everything is inside the monitor.

If you're feeling adventurous, you can try using OpenCore Legacy Patcher. It allows you to install newer macOS versions like Monterey or Ventura on 2014 Macs. Just keep in mind it's not officially supported, and it could lead to bugs or performance issues. Only go this route if you’re comfortable with troubleshooting problems.

First, you should check which macOS version you’re currently running. You can do this by going to the settings. Knowing your current version can help to determine your upgrade options. Also, which websites are you having issues with? Some might not work on older systems.

Right now, it's OS X Yosemite, and I’m having trouble with LinkedIn loading properly. I’m not sure what’s the newest version I can get to.

No worries! I believe your iMac can upgrade all the way to macOS Big Sur, which should help with those website issues.
